I can’t tell you how many minutes, hours, and days I lived, breathed and dreamt of being an athlete. From an early age till my adult years, I was into sports and was truly competitive in anything I tackled. Rowing and field hockey were my two main loves, and that slowly morphed into running in my later years. When I look back on those times, it’s not the hard, long training sessions, regattas, races, travel and games that I fondly remember and reflect on; it’s the teams I was fortunate enough to be a part of. For without my teammates, none of those achievements would have come to fruition; it’s the team that got us over the finish line, the team that helped us win that game, and it was my running partners who dragged me across the finish line of the marathon. Without my teammates, I wouldn’t have those fonds memories and successes to reflect back on.
Being in business is no different than being part of a team. To be successful in anything you tackle, you need to surround yourself with good teammates to help you meet your business goals. Look at Karve Solutions, for example; I’m part of a team. Without these key people around me, I wouldn’t be able to accomplish some of the things we’ve done here. I have a great business partner (who by the way, was part of a few of my field hockey teams and was a fantastic running partner!), we have started to hire other great staff members, we have a great marketing guru who takes care of all our marketing, we have a great legal team that deals with all the legalities, we have great support from many accountants in our area, and the list can go on. We have team!
One of the keys to any successful business is knowing where your strengths and weaknesses are within yourself. Do you think I was the strongest oarswoman in the boat? Absolutely not! But, collectively, we were a crew to beat because every team player in that boat had something to give and they gave their 100%. Without all of us working together, we would have sunk (pun intended!). Do you think Henry Ford did everything himself? Not a chance. He surrounded himself with key players who helped his dreams come to be realities. Behind every successful business, is a fantastic team, hence the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people.
Take a look at the people around you in your business right now. Are your employees great team members? Do you feel supported by them? What about other areas you may have outsourced? Do they support you and do they want to see you succeed? These are important questions to ask yourself, and hopefully, you will like the answers you get. But if you feel that you are not supported in the way you feel you should be, then it’s time to look at those around you and make a few substitutions.
This is by no means an easy feat for any business; there are going to be a few bumps along the way that you’ll need to clear and training to get through. But if you’re willing to put in the time and energy into making your team a great one, the end result will be worth it, trust me! The right team will get you to the finish line, and towards the goals that you’ve set for your business.
